Biography

Jonathan I. Rabinowitz has been practicing law for 45 years in the field of debtor/creditor rights, bankruptcy, and business reorganizations. While practicing in business insolvencies in all types of industries, including manufacturing and retail, Jonathan has a special concentration in real estate reorganizations.

He argued the seminal case in the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit concerning assignments of rents in real estate Chapter 11 proceedings, Jason Realty. Jonathan also has extensive experience in all aspects of healthcare restructuring, including hospitals, group medical practices, and nursing homes. He represented the State of New Jersey in various healthcare matters including the NJ HIP and AHERF bankruptcies. Jonathan has also acted as a (i) mediator in bankruptcy adversary proceeding, (ii) Chapter 11 Trustee and (iii) State Court Receiver in aid of execution. Most recently, Jonathan represented Custom Alloy Corporation, which manufactured pipe fittings for the oil and gas and defense industries. In that Chapter 11 case, Custom successfully sold its assets to Trident Maritime Systems, a portfolio company of J.F. Lehman & Company. Jonathan represents parties-in-interest including debtors and committees in bankruptcy courts throughout the country, including those courts located in New Jersey and New York.

Jonathan was a law clerk with the New York State Board of Equalization and Assessment specializing in real property tax matters. He served as acting counsel to the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, which guaranties student loans and provides tuition assistance and scholarships.

Jonathan has been an adjunct professor at Rutgers University School of Law in Newark since 1995, teaching advanced commercial law, bankruptcy and business associations, and is a former adjunct professor at New York University. He also lectures for the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Education (ICLE), the National Business Institute, the Essex County Bar Association, and the New Jersey State Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Jonathan has authored numerous articles on debtor/creditor rights issues including a chapter for the Essex County Bar Association's book, Traps for the Unwary: Pitfalls in the Practice and an article published in The New Jersey Law Journal concerning limits on the Bankruptcy Court's subject matter jurisdiction. Jonathan has been active in various bar and trade associations including the Bar Association of the City of New York, the Essex County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Commercial Law League of America, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the Dartmouth Lawyers' Association.
